Nights at sea,
in short films
How artificial light changes the night for sea life, told in 30–60 second vertical films. Every film carries its sources and an AI disclosure.

Background
What happens to the night at sea
What we call a night view can mean a night that never comes for sea life. Three findings from published research and agency guidance.
-
Light on the water
Up to 100× moonlight
Artificial light can make the sea up to 100 times brighter than natural moonlight, and it is detected along about a quarter of the world's coastlines.

-
Coral
2,135 spawning records
In most genera, corals exposed to artificial light spawned 1–3 days closer to the full moon than corals on unlit reefs. Spawning earlier can lower the chances of fertilisation and survival.
Correlational study — not direct proof for every species or for Korean reefs · Davies et al. (2023), Nature Communications
-
Seabirds
Nights they lose their way
Many seabirds are disoriented by artificial light at night and can collide with vessels. The risk is highest on foggy or rainy nights.

Keep the light we need.
Cut the light that spills.
- Keep
- Navigation, street and work lights that keep people safe stay on.
- Reduce
- Switch off what isn't needed, shield what remains so it only lights where it should, and shorten the hours.
- Colour last
- Warmer light with less blue and violet helps, but switching off and shielding come first.

- Only films whose makers agree to publish are posted.
- Before posting we check facts and sources, the AI disclosure, and music and image rights together.
- Only films about sea life and marine light pollution. Posting is optional, never a condition of finishing the class.
- Makers can ask us to take a film down at any time.
